SANDFORD IN OXFORD CITY ?

"Oxford City Council considers that the City's boundary needs re-drawing" states the consultation paper published by Oxford City last December. The O.C.C. proposes Sandford and Littlemore for inclusion in the City of Oxford for the main reason that areas close to Oxford which are already developed, and those which are envisaged as being developed in the next ten years, should be identified with Oxford.
Other reasons are stated such as taxi surcharges if you travel from Oxford Station to Sandford would be waived; queries relating to rating, housing, planning, etc. could be more readily resolved because of easier access to Council Offices; problems with refuse collection where the present Oxford District boundary is along one street of houses could, and would, be more efficiently arranged.

The Parish Council have discussed the above proposals and agreed that Sandford should remain in South Oxfordshire District. It was felt that no real benefit would be gained by making Sandford part of Oxford City. However, the loss of the Parish Council with its statutory powers to levy rates and spend the money for Sandford, would be against the interest of the village.

Copies of the consultation paper are available from Oxford City Council (St. Aldate's Chambers) and comments are requested by 15th February, 1982.

SPONSORED FAST SANDFORD YOUTH GROUP
Well, folks, we did it All of us who started finished, and those of you who think 24 hours without food is easy, are invited to join us if we do it again.

We started at 6 p.m. on the Saturday, 28th November, with everyone arriving and, after they had settled in, we had a film on the video recorder and television set that had been loaned to us by Hi-Fi Markets in Summertown. We then used our disco gear until midnight. Then it was time for our horror movie which was so bad it wasn't even funny, so we watched Bruce Lee in 'Enter the Dragon'. By then it was 2 a.m. and we had drinks and practiced the martial arts. After settling down at 3 a.m., one hour later a member fell over the disco lights on the way to the, kitchen for a drink and, at 5 a.m. the younger members of the group made us all a very welcome early morning cup of tea.

Throughout Sunday members played table tennis and snooker while others watched films or played the disco equipment. At 6 p.m. the tuck shop was opened which did a roaring trade. Although we do not yet know how much we have raised, we hope to reach £200.

WHO PAYS
A number of people have been wondering who pays for the Sandford LINK and the Littlemore Local.
The costs of both papers are met by the respective Parish Councils. This generally amounts to the paper and printing monies only; the time taken in preparation, typing, printing and distribution is provided free. The cost of getting the papers to your door is about 2½p per household, but do remember that it is your news and views that are needed.

Our efforts in this were helped by Mike Norton who gave £10 as did Charles and Di from the Kings Arms. May I express our thanks to all our other sponsors who have been very generous.

Reported by a now thinner Dion Slay.

FORGET-ME-NOTS
Thirty three members had a Christmas Dinner in the Village Hall on 8th December. Wine was donated for the dinner by the Youth Club.

Afterwards a film show was put on and narrated by Mr. Dennis Coombes, of Littlemore. A tree was planted by Mr. A. Robinson and Mr. R. Crickmay to commemorate the opening of the Village hall. Tea, mince pies and a free raffle ended a very enjoyable Party.

Reported by Eileen Heery.

CHURCH ORGAN
The Church organ is in need of a major overhaul which would probably cost £500 have you any ideas for fund-raising, please?

ST. ANDREWS
Oddments of news this month.
************
Thanks are due to Dennis Harris, Charles Pitson, Mervyn Harris, Albert Partridge and Alan Cooke for the repainting of the Chancel. Everyone has a busy time coming up to Christmas but somehow this was fitted in and I am sure that the brightness of Chancel ready for Christmas was appreciated by all.
************
Confirmations. The following were confirmed on December 12th by the Bishop of Oxford at Headington Quarry Church:
Rosemary Earp (nee Druce)
Mitchelle Jackson
Amanda Cotten

************
The Parish Quota has been raised to £1,100 for 1982/83. This amounts to about 3 pence per week for each member of the Parish, or 12 pence per week for the average family.

Despite the smallness of these sums when reckoned on such a basis, it is doubtful that this money will be found. Remember that the Church needs your support if 900 years of a Parish Church in Sandford is not to be swept aside by the Redundant Churches Commission.

By the way, for those of you who may have been perplexed by the request for S.A.T. & B, it means sopranos, altos, tenors and basses so come on you singers the Church Choir needs you.

HALL NEWS
The Village Hall Committee gratefully accepted the gifts of an automatic kettle from the Youth Club and a piano from Mr. R. Norton.

TODDLER GROUP
35 Toddlers enjoyed a Christmas Party in the Village Hall. Sweets for the children were provided by the Youth Club and the Post Office.

CAROL SINGERS
The Church Choir entertained the residents of Chiltern House (home for spastics) with a selection of carols just before Christmas.

Also, the Village carol singing raised £15.40 for the mother and Toddler Group

ITEMS for the February edition to M. Hobbs by 20th January, 1982.
