TEN ACRES
The older gypsies in the Ten Acres Site are anxious to be on good terms with their neighbours the residents of Kiln Park Site - reported a recent edition of the Oxford Star. For many years there have been problems, and more so since Mrs. Hazel Hutton gave up the job of part-time Site Warden.

Various attempts to reorganise the site and appoint another Warden have been difficult due to lack of funds available to S.O.D.C.

However at a recent meeting of the County Council and the District Council's Housing Committee, monies have been approved for a full-time Warden together with general improvements to the Ten Acres Site including new roads, better drainage and electrical supplies.

Mr. Benny, Deputy Housing Chief for S.O.D.C. said that provision of better facilities and a full-time Warden will make Ten Acres similar to the Slade. (At the Slade complaints because of gypsies have dramatically reduced since similar measures were implemented.)

The improvements should start in March with the staffing arrangements being sorted out towards the end of the year. This is good news; it should avert the threatened rates strike by the residents of Kiln Park and it is hoped that Kiln Park and Ten Acres can become good neighbours again.

WELL DONE The jumble sale organised by Hazel and Bob Hutton on 23rd January in the Village Hall raised over Ł40 for the Village Hall Funds.

Also, monies raised from the carol singing at the Kiln Park site has already been put to good use. Paving slabs have been purchased and will be laid near the Hall entrance.

Well done to all concerned.

OXFORD'S BOUNDARY CHANGE At the time of going into print there has been little response from the parishioners about Oxford City Council's proposals to include Sandford within the City.

Any comments about these proposals should be sent/handed to any member of the Parish Council or why not come along to the meeting on Monday, 8th February in the Village Hall when Oxford City's proposals will be discussed.

CARNIVAL '82 The date for this annual event will be Saturday, 21st August, 1982. This Year's Carnival should be even bigger than last year's, with one of the main attractions being lawn-mower racing.
There will be a number of classes of entry based on the rules issued by the British Lawn-Mower Racing Association. So, if you are able to run fast behind, or drive fast whilst sitting on your mower, why not enter the competition. (There will be some good prizes. More details will be available shortly but anyone interested should contact Max Hobbs. Oxford 779715

DID YOU KNOW? The playing field is leased from Magdalen College for Ł5/year. The swings, round-about and slide belong to and are maintained by the Parish Council.

GARDENERS TAKE NOTE The top soil left over from the construction of the new Village Hall is still available free to anyone who lives in Sandford.
If you want to collect soil with a trailer or van you will need the gate opening - Mr. Heery, 73 Henley Road, has the keys

COLOURING COMPETITION The judging of the neatest coloured picture of Spring Flowers from the last issue of the LINK was difficult. However, after much deliberation, the Ł1.50 book token has been awarded to NEIL EDWARDS aged 5¾.

Don't forget the poster competition advertised in the Littlemore Local is open to most Sandford children.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT For a modest Ł1 a ticket for entrance and refreshment 75 people enjoyed a very pleasant evening of music at a concert in the Village Hall on January 22nd. The evening was well started by the Jubilee Brass Ensemble with a fine arrangement of Blaze Away.
This was followed by the family JULIER - mum, dad and the three children all playing various types of stringed instruments - Claire's rendition of Roumanian Dances was particularly well performed.
The Peerless Barber Shop Quintet, with 'Buggy Ride', completed the first half of the evening's programme before the refreshments were served. The second half was equally as enjoyable.

Thanks are due to Elizabeth Burra for organising the event which raised Ł120 for Village Hall Funds. Also to all the musicians:

ST. ANDREW'S In the notes about St. Andrew's last month, mention was made of something called the 'Parish Quota' - but I imagine that there are many people who wondered just what this is. Well, every parish in the Diocese of Oxford is expected to make a yearly contribution to the expenses of the Diocese - and a 'target amount' is set. This sum is worked out by a complicated procedure by the Diocesan Board of Finance and is based on a number of factors, such as the population of the parish and the number of people on the Church Electoral Roll.

In the view of many of us the assessment arrived at in this way is quite unrealistic - but the fact remains that we are expected to raise the sum required during the current year and this year Sandford is being asked to subscribe Ł1,177. In the present situation it is virtually certain that we shall not be able to give anything like this amount. If we were to send such a sum there would be little or no money left for the running expenses of the church - bearing in mind, for example, that two of our quarterly electricity bills come to over Ł100 each.

There are at present 32 people on the Electoral Roll - some of whom seldom turn up at Church. Of course, if all 32 came to church every Sunday things could be different. The fact remains that Ł1,177 have been asked for. Last year we were Ł400 short of the set target and if Sandford continues to fail to provide what is asked for, the Redundant Churches Commission may well start considering whether or not our church should be closed - even after 900 years! This should be clearly understood by everyone in the parish.

St. Andrew's is your church - but it could so easily be made redundant if it is not supported; in which case Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals would have to take place at Littlemore or Cowley or Iffley

It is entirely up to you.
