SANDFORD LINK

PARISH SAYS NO TO BOUNDARY CHANGES

The Parish meeting on Monday, 8th February, unanimously agreed that the inclusion of Sandford within the boundary of Oxford City would only disbenefit the people of Sandford. A definite NO to Oxford City's proposals was recorded with this decision being passed on to Oxford before February 15th prior to representation to the boundary commission.
It would appear that the 7 members of the British Council Mrs. Connie Norman (District Councillor), the 15 parishioners who attended and several written replies are in accord with the County Council and the other District Councils in strongly objecting to this take-over by Oxford City.

STOP PRESS
Oxford City has dropped its plans to extend the City limits to include Sandford.

ALI-BABA
What a splendid production this was by the Sandford Youth Drama Group. There were some very creditable performances but everyone's effort is needed to put on the show. So to all of those who performed and helped behind the scenes - thank you. Over £120 was raised for the Village Hall Fund.

HALL FLOOR
A split joint on the central heating piping flooded the hall and meant the cancellation of the Mother & Toddler Group and the Forget-me-Nots. The plumbers are being held responsible for damage to a large area of the beech strip floor.

TELEPHONE KIOSK
After 40 years outside the Post Office in Church Road, the telephone kiosk was removed on February 17th and more importantly it was not replaced or repositioned. This is a total lack of planning on behalf of British Telecom (B.T.) and we all have a right to be angry.

Some 3 years ago B.T. were asked to remove the kiosk to the other end of the Post Office (Henley Road end) thereby providing more privacy to Post Office House. However, B.T. stated that any resiting of the kiosk must be to a position where there was a likelihood of greater use and hence income. The Parish Council's first choice was the corner of Church Road! Henley Road a site which B.T. has eventually agreed to after putting forward several of their own suggestions.

B.T. have now said that the matter is receiving urgent attention.

ANTI-LITTER BUGS
The Parish Council would like to thank the two young girls who swept and scrubbed the big bus shelter in Henley Rd. They were noticed as the Clerk was on her rounds, busily scrubbing away, clad in overalls and gum boots. The litter inside and outside this shelter has been an eyesore for a very long time and the Parish Council are very grateful for these girls' efforts done on their own initiative.

ST. ANDREW'S
For the last couple of months we have drawn attention to financial matters connected with your Church - and the difficulties we mentioned remain to be solved but we turn this month to what the Church is all about. Why is it there at all? The answer is, it is there to try to carry on the work Jesus Christ began during His life on earth the work of bringing more and more people to acknowledge the sovereignty of God in their lives.

The reason for Christ's coming to earth on the first Christmas Day is given in the words 'God so loved the world that He gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in Him should not perish but have everlasting life'. That was God's 'saving act' and by it He showed us the kind of God He is and His great love for men, women and children everywhere. It involved Christ in the voluntary sacrifice of His life on the Cross 'for us men and for our salvation', as the Creed puts it, and God vindicated, or justified, that sacrificial offering by raising Him from the dead on the first Easter Sunday.

It is these facts which the Church remembers, especially during the next two months in the seasons of Lent and Easter. The continuing existence of the Church today, nearly twenty centuries after it happened, is perhaps the strongest evidence for the truth of Christ's Resurrection because if He didn't rise again there would have been no Gospel no Good News - to give to the world, and the Church would never have come into existence, let alone lasted till the present day.

If there is one idea that needs to be exploded it is that Christianity is just a code of ethics, a system of conduct. It isn't. It is a way of life based on belief that in and through His Son Jesus Christ, God acted on our behalf nearly twenty centuries ago to 'put us back on the right lines' and show us the way to Himself. To quote some words from one of our oratorios, 'If with all your hearts ye truly seek Me, ye shall ever surely find Me; thus saith the Lord'.

SANDFORD-ON-THAMES WITH NO ACCESS TO THE THAMES ?

MAJOR DAVIES DIES
Sandford's District Councillor died suddenly last month. Major Davis had represented five Parishes, including Sandford, since Local Government reorganisation in 1974, taking appointments as Chairman of the Finance, Transportation and Accommodation Committees. Major Davis leaves a wife and son.

WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH
Each year the village is sent an entry form for 'The Best Kept Village' competition. Each year the entry form has not been returned because it is thought that we would not stand any chance. Each year (certainly for the last three) it has become easier not to return an entry because the village seems to be more untidy and unkempt, and the chances of selection become more remote.

The litter and general rubbish everywhere is an eyesore behind 10 acres site, the farm entrance off the slip road Church Road particularly near the sub-station (Fry's Barn) and the recreation field by the swings.

What are you going to do about it ? Certainly Sandford does have problems if it competes with some of the pretty Cotswold villages and Hamlets in North Oxfordshire - but there is still no allowable excuse for the state of untidiness/ litter in the village. If everyone collected a carrier bag of litter each time: they walked through the village, a significant impression could be made - why not do something instead of complaining Take example from the two youngsters mentioned on the front page.

The Notice below appeared recently attached to the gate of the wooden bridge access to the mill cut by the Lock:

"Due to the instability of the brick support the Company has closed off this bridge until such time as the bridge is repaired or replaced.
The access via the bridge is a private right of way and the Company accepts no responsibility whatsoever for injury to persons caused by an attempted use of this bridge whilst this closure is effective."
(The Company referred to is Courage Breweries Ltd.)

So there is no public access to the river this point was hotly contested in a public inquiry about 15 years ago but the Village lost. Even the previous concession has now been withdrawn and if the bridge is unsafe, the gate should be locked to prevent anyone from becoming injured.

Better still that the "Company" replaces/repairs the bridge very quickly to allow the people of Sandford access to the river and towpath on the other side. The Parish Council need to take action quickly and effectively.
