St. ANDREWS CHURCH.

Hallowe'en' The Eve of All Hallows - that is, (All Saints' Day is Nov. 1st) - and the occurrence of this festival reminds us that the present Church Year is nearing its end.
Whereas the new calendar year begins on January 1st, the new Church Year begins on Advent Sunday which is always the fourth Sunday before Christmas.

During the short Advent Season we think of the two comings of Jesus Christ - the first when He was born in Bethlehem nearly 2,000 years ago, and the second at the end of time when he will come as Judge. Advent is a period of preparation for the Great Festival of Christmas and on Advent Sunday evening (Nov. 28th) at 6-30 a special service will take the place of Evensong.

This service is based on the Advent carol service used in the chapel of Kings College, Cambridge, and is symbolic of the movement from darkness to light - from the Old Testament to the new, and its hymns, carols and readings recall the expectation of the coming of the Messiah, - In King's Chapel the whole service is a procession from beginning to end. It begins in the darkness of the anti-chaple and moves forward in stages towards the brightly lit quire, stations being made on the way, at which lessons are read and carols sung. The climax of the service is the melody of 'Sleepers-wake' played on the organ as the choir moves to the sanctuary.

Sandford Church is not big enough to do all this, but her, the choir does go to the back of the church and begin the service from there, processing up to the nave during the first hymn, and the service follows the same order, with lessons alternating with hymns and Advent carols. This service has been held here for several years now and so far we have not had less than forty people present in church. We are hoping that this number may be increased this year.

This is an interesting service, with plenty of well-known Advent hymns for the congregation to sing, and it helps to prepare us in a spiritual way for the keeping of Christmas - which is, first and foremost, a Christian festival, not a pagan one. Do come along and join us on November 28th.

Donald Fehrenbach.

FAREWELL.
Condolences to the family of Mrs. P. Tutty of River View Cottages, recently passed away. One of Sandfords oldest residents, who was born in River View Cottages, and worked at the Mill for many years,

To all those who are sick, or in hospital we hope you will be well soon, and home for Christmas.

FAIR COMMENT.
(Now it can be told)
According to one of its own elected members of South Oxfordshire District Council, "We have an extremely bad name, when it comes to planning matters".
One way of improving the Councils image he suggested, would be to let people putting forward planning applications TO HAVE THEIR SAY.
This will surprise most people, that such important decisions are being taken WITHOUT PEOPLE HAVING THEIR SAY.
Plans and drawings do not always tell the whole story, although professional planners may not like the idea, it is sometimes a good thing to let people HAVE THEIR SAY, or even explain the finer points.
THIS IS KNOWN AS DEMOCRACY.

COUNCIL HOUSE RENTS.
At the meeting of Council House tenants and South Oxfordshire Dist. Council, held in the Village Hall last month, tenants were informed by the housing Officer that it was not the Dist. Council that increased the rents.
INSPECTION OF THE MINUTES OF THAT COUNCIL WILL PROVE OTHERWISE. Orders and directives from Whitehall have still to be authorised by the LANDLORDS and rating authorities that is S.O.D.C. Just to keep the records straight.
