*****   EDITOR'S NOTES   *****

Award For Good Beer
Mrs. Joyce Rolston of The Fox at Sandford has been awarded the Pub-of-the-Month Award by CAMERA for the quality and condition of her ales.
Congratulations Joyce, keep up this most important work.

Modernisation of Council Houses in Sandford
Although I have not a lot of respect for South Oxfordshire District Council Housing Dept., I must say what an excellent job has been done in modernising some of the Council houses in the village. They certainly are a great improvement and I am sure the tenants must be very delighted with the results and feel their "upheaval" very worthwhile.

Youth Club
Will the parents of all the youngsters going to the 13+ youth club please note that the club closes at 10.30 p.m., and not 10 o'clock as stated in previous issues. I would like to apologise for any problems this may have caused.

Refuse Collection
Pritchards Refuse Service is still trying to organise a decent refuse collection for Sandford. Since the last issue of Sandford Link we have had four refuse collections, two on the correct day and two on a Friday morning. The two Friday collections were created by:-
1) their lorry running out of fuel on Kiln Mobile Home Park, where they made a disgusting mess with their diesel fuel (which they failed to clean up).
2) their lorry broke down.
If you have any complaints regarding your refuse collection please telephone Wallingford 35351 and ask for the Technical Services Dept.

Speed Limit
Please let us all remember for the sake of our children and old folk the speed limit in the village is 40 miles per hour.

Change of Telephone Number
Please note that thanks to I.T.T. I have had to change my telephone number to Oxford 716537.

Comments and Letters for Next Issue
WILL YOU PLEASE ENSURE THAT THE EDITOR HAS ALL YOUR COMMENTS AND LETTERS FOR THE NEXT ISSUE BY NO LATER THAN 20th OCTOBER 1983.

*****   PARISH COUNCIL NOTES   *****

Itinerants Parking on the Verges
County Council policy states that itinerants parking by the highway will not be moved on unless:-
1. They are a danger to traffic.
2. They are a danger to public health.

The Parish Council has written to enquire whether use of hedgerows by itinerants who have no inside toilets is considered a health hazard by the official mind. We have suggested to Highways Dept. that they should plant some bushes on the corner at the south end of Henley Road in order to prevent caravans camping there, or create a soft verge. They cannot dig a ditch because of underground cables, or plant bollards because of danger to drivers.

If future campers on this site cause a nuisance to residents by noise, fires or in any other way, will you please inform Mrs. Heery or myself at once. We can only get Highways Dept. to take action if we have a precise complaint.

Dumping of Rubbish
Rubbish is being dumped in the remains of the Willow Copse in the field north of Kiln Caravan Park site. If anyone can take the vehicle number of people seen dumping rubbish there. Will you please inform a member of the Parish Council, so that action can be taken against them.

Elizabeth Burra.

*****   COMMUNITY POLICE NOTES   *****

Now that the darker evenings are beginning to draw in, It is the time to make sure that the childrens bicycles are fitted with an efficient front and rear lighting system, if it is to be used during lighting up time. It is advisable to impress on the children the need to wear a bright item of outer clothing when riding or walking along the village roads at night. It is a better idea to invest in a florescent over-vest or a cross belt.

I would also like to take the opportunity to ask motorists and motorcyclists to take just a little more extra care when parking their vehicles during darkness, in making sure they do not obstruct footpaths or become a hazard to other road users.

The theft of pedal cycles is still on the increase, so I hope that all cycle owners have had their cycles marked with their post code and are in possession of a suitable lock and chain to deter the would be thief. It takes only a few moments to secure a bicycle, but it takes even less time for a thief to jump on it and ride away.

J. DELL.
Community Police Officer.

*****   ST. ANDREW'S CHURCH   *****

On 2nd October 1983 we are keeping our Harvest Festival and services will be at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. The preacher at Evensong will be the Rev. D. Willis. When I was a choirboy my Vicar used to insist that the Harvest Festival should be called the Harvest Thanksgiving - and, of course, it is a yearly thanksgiving for all that God gives us in the produce of the earth, the sea and the industries of our land. How grateful are we - and do we express our gratitude to God for all that He provides? Shakespeare wrote "Blow, blow, thou winter wind; thou art not so unkind as a man's ingratitude".

All ingratitude is unkind and it discourages people from giving. Ultimately all the things we enjoy come from God - home, possessions, friends, holidays and the rest - and the Harvest Festival is an opportunity for us to come and give God thanks in company with our fellow Christians. Gifts of flowers and produce for decorating the church will be gratefully received on Saturday morning, 1st October.

I would like to remind parishioners that there is a weekday Communion Service on Thursdays at 9 a.m. It may be that some people who for some reason cannot come on Sundays may like to take this opportunity of making their Communion during the week. 6th October is an exception as I shall be away that day.

Donald Fehrenbach.
