The Link

Issue no 24.November 1983

*****   OLD BRICK YARD   *****

The Crapper family who own the old brick yard have put forward plans for its development as a small factory workshop area for small businesses, along with landscaping and fencing. They also plan to widen the road. Talking to some of the residents of Kiln Mobile Home Park they all seem to be in favour of the development. It is felt that it will stop the brick yard being used as a dump and prevent the vandalism.

*****   BICYCLE LIGHTS   *****

Although P.C. Dell wrote an article in last months Sandford Link about lights on cycles there are still cycles in the village without lights, during the hours of darkness. Apart from breaking the law it is highly dangerous. A driver who has a car coming towards him cannot always see a cyclist with no lights, lets all make an attempt to see that no cyclist gets killed in our village.

*****   CHRISTMAS   *****

With all the activities taking place in the village over the Christmas period, can you please ensure that insertions for next months Link are in to me by November 18th.

*****   HORSES   *****

During my final two and a half years in the forces I served with 'The Kings Troop' R.H.A., and one order which was strictly adhered to was that no one rode a horse without his hard hat on. We live in a village and therefore, have a number of horses about and it surprises me the number of riders without hats. No matter how good a rider you think you are or how 'bomb proof' you consider your horse. A horse can always be spooked.

Please let us see more safety hats being worn by horse riders.

*****   BUS SERVICE TO COWLEY CENTRE   *****

Once again the bus company are conducting a survey on the use of buses being used in the Oxford Area. The bus from Sandford to Cowley Centre will be one of the services at risk. We will not be able to ask the Parish Council for assistance again in approaching the bus company. They have made representation for us and won a bus service at the beginning of the year, which is not used. So in the next few weeks make an effort to support the work of the council by using the service.

*****   PARISH COUNCIL NOTES   *****

Mrs Hutton and Mrs Shepherd have prepared a questionnaire for a Village Appraisal - other villages have done similar surveys with the purpose of discovering what improvements and changes people would like. to see in their villages. We hope that a large number of people will fill in the forms, so that we can try to meet some of your wishes in our future plans. Many thanks to Mrs Hutton and Mrs Shepherd for the time and energy they have put into preparing the scheme.

Plans have been put forward for a housing development on the Sandford Hill Site. The Parish Council considered these at the last meeting and welcomed the prospect of new housing in the Village and the development of what could be a very attractive site. The Council believes that the density suggested is too high for the site, and for the traffic it would generate down Church Road which is already dangerous. So far plans are at a very early stage, but we look forward to having new housing in Sandford before too long.

*****   SAVE THE CHILDREN FUND   *****

The house to house collection made £46.62. Many thanks to all those who contributed and helped collect.

*****   COMMUNITY POLICE NOTES   *****

As I write this article it is 14 days until "Guy Fawkes" Night, Saturday 5th November. I have already received complaints of fireworks being discharged on the village streets. This practice is very dangerous and must stop. It alarms older residents of the village, terrifies animals and is against the law. I hope I do not receive any further complaints which involve local people.

On a happier note I hope the weather is fine for the bonfires and firework displays and that everyone reads and follows the instructions printed on the fireworks so everyone enjoys themselves and the occasion is not spoilt by accidents which should never have happened.
PC. J. DELL.
Community Police Officer.

*****   CAR BOOT SALE   *****

The Car Boot Sale on 29th October raised £177.56 for the village church. Thank you to everyone who helped. We shall probably have another in the Spring.

On behalf of the Spastics Society, thank you to all the people who supported the recent village collection.
Barbara Hobbs.

*****   I-SPY SANDFORD   *****

No2.

  (1) Old Door
WHERE IS IT?
WHEN WAS IT BUILT?

(2) How many street lights are there in Sandford? How much do they cost to run for one year?

*****   ANSWERS TO LAST MONTHS I-SPY   *****

1. J T N - this is a stone plaque set high on the west brick wall of the Paper Mill.
It can be seen easily from the lock house side of the river if you stand near the downstream lock gates and look up above the ivy on the wall opposite.

The initials stand for John Trevor Norris a former owner of the Paper Mill.

2. Stonesfield Slating.

This is a roofing material of thinly bedded sandy limestone. It is usually associated with buildings in the Cotteswolds. However, the same rock (from a sub-division of Jurassic system) does occur in Sandford.

There are only three buildings in Sandford with this type of roofs Nos 3 and 4 Rock Farm have (excluding the extension to No3 which is roofed in a modern 'cast concrete' equivalent) and Fry's barn in Church Road,
