With a glorious summer behind us and the long winter nights stretching ahead, many people consider the Autumn as a time for taking stock and planning what they can do with themselves. If you are one of those people, perhaps you may like to consider the community in which you live. Many people feel that they would like to do more for the village but are not too sure how to go about offering their skills or services or even how to contact other like-minded people. The things to which I refer need not be too onerous, simply offering to clean or decorate the church with flowers once a month can be sufficient, or if you have the desire to organise a special event. The Church Bazaar next month is an ideal opportunity - do you have time to help? If you do have any ideas or simply want to contact someone the Link is here to help put you in touch.
Any articles for submission should be with the editor at xx
Church Road by the 17th of each month.

Most of us when young
learned to express our sense of wonder and gratitude in the words our parents
and grandparents used. Some of our children still learn this worship at
school. But now only a minority of us think it worth while to join together
with our neighbours and gladly give thanks, and give a token out of the
good things we have received to be shared with those who are short. The
month of October begins with a chance to do this by making a contribution
to decorating the church with flowers, fruit and vegetables and by joining
together on Sunday to praise God 'for our creation, preservation, and all the
blessings of this life.'
Jesus says in John 15:5 'CUT OFF FROM ME YOU CAN DO NOTHING'
The Bible also says his strength is made perfect in our weakness. So when
we feel that our cross is weighing us down let us be glad and know that Jesus
will be our Simon and he will help us to carry it and out of our weakness
he will be made strong.

| St. Andrew's Church Christmas Bazaar will be held on Saturday 18th November at 2 pm in the Village Hall. To make this a great success we need your support to help us to continue to raise funds for the repair of the church. So, can you help with donations for various stalls, i.e.: cakes, raffles, pickles, preserves, books, gifts, toys, tombola prizes etc., and give them to the Church Wardens as soon as you can ?..........And most of all, come and enjoy the afternoon. |
12oz/350g margarine
8oz/225g golden syrup
1lb/454g light brown sugar
1 large 14oz/397g
can of condensed milk
4oz/125g unsalted peanuts
MAKES 3lbs/1.36kg
Lightly grease a 12"x9"/23cmx30cm Swiss roll tin. Melt the margarine in
a heavy based saucepan. Add the golden syrup, brown sugar and condensed
milk. Bring slowly to the boil and simmer for 25 minutes, stirring all the
time. To test the toffee remove from the heat and drop a little into cold water,
if it hardens it is ready (127°C/260°F). If not ready, return to the heat and test
every two minutes. Sprinkle the peanuts evenly over the base of the swiss
roll tin. Pour over the toffee and mark into squares before it is set. When
completely cold, cut into squares and wrap in waxed paper or cellophane.

Mrs Shepherd raised the point that the brick piers to the boundary walls were in excess of
the 900mm as shown on the plans (August 1988) and extremely close to the road edge thus
obscuring the sightlines. The Clerk was asked to bring this matter to the attention of the
Planning Officer.

reported that it had been agreed that the transit gypsy site would be in Benson. It would take
about a year to set up.
Date of Next Meeting
Confirm for Monday, 4th September, 1989 at 7 pm in the Village Hall.
Meeting closed at 9.20 pm.
This village has all the advantage of a charming situation and its riverside front was well kept and cared for. In some places however, there was a litter problem. This was particularly so in the playing field where there was litter near the entrance and around seats. There was even some broken glass around the "maypole" (?) in the centre. There was no sign of a litter bin which might have helped the situation. The seats were undamaged but one was badly defaced by graffiti and there were broken signs. This was all a pity since the grass was well kept and equipment in good order. Elsewhere in the village the judges noticed one overflowing litter bin and another very full indeed.
The churchyard was quite well tended in an informal country style in front but work is needed on the rear section which was rather overgrown, gravestones included. On the other hand, the two bus shelters were tidy and one contained notices in immaculate condition. The main noticeboard was also good.
All three public houses were trim with very tidy car parks. The Village Hall was fairly new and in good condition. The judges imagine the surrounding garden is gradually being developed.
Both in the older part of the village and in the modern development, houses were cared for and gardens tended. Fences, walls and ditches were in good condition. The footpaths were well kept and at least one new stile was noticed.
Verges were reasonably well kept. In the older part they
had not been mown but were attractively natural with
cow-parsley and buttercups in profusion.
