The Link
July/August 1990             Issue 33

This edition of the Link will cover both July and August, So the church services and chemist rota run through to September. The reason for this is that many people are on holiday during this period and articles which are already very scarce become even more so. This means that anyone wishing to contribute must submit their items by the 10th August in time for the September edition. Apologies in advance to any advertisers, your normal ads. will run for a month extra into 1991 to make up for it. Don't forget as well that the crossword this month carries a prize of £15.00, surely this must be worth an entry, so get your thinking caps on. I have suggested to the crossword compiler that they may be a little hard, but he says that they're already too easy and that a child of five could do them with his eyes shut! There's a challenge if ever I heard one.

Meeting Point

There will be no meeting point in July or August. We will aim to restart on Friday 14th September, 12.30pm.

Flower Festival & Fete

Thanks to all who worked, attended, gave and spent, making both of these events enjoyable and successful.

Children's Choir

This is planned for 10.00am the first Sunday of the month, and is open to all. Those interested please contact Linda Hackett, xxx Henley Road, for rehearsal time.

Sponsored Cycle Ride

The annual ride for Oxfordshire Historic Churches Preservation Trust takes place on Saturday 8th September. Sandford has promised to enter a team (and claim a share in the proceeds). Churches are open from l0am to 6pm and you work out your own route and mode of transport (walk, cycle, car etc.) and get yourself sponsors. It is architecturally very interesting and satisfying, and free advice is available on routes, high spots etc. If you would like an entry form please contact Mrs Harris (24 Henley Road) or Mr Jones (Cabora Bassa, Church Road) or the Vicar (Lower Farm, or tel 748848 for delivery).

Friends of Sandford Fun Run

"Young men and maidens, old people and children - join the fun run". By the end of this century nearly every village in England will have its own fun run. The first Sandford occurence of the event is Saturday 14th July 1990. Start 3pm in field outside the village hall. The mute will be announced later and will be picturesque and about 3 miles. Entry registration £1, but children free. Please indicate your willingness to run or walk it - or to be a steward.

A Special Occasion

Sunday 10th June marked a very special occasion here in Sandford. Two of Church Roads loveliest people, Tom and Lillian Bennett, celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary. Tom and Lillian met nearly 70 years ago in an Oxford ballroom and Tom has been sweeping Lillian off her feet ever since!

Our warmest congratulations and best wishes go to them both.

A Recent Festival

Not everyone noticed. Even in Sandford not everyone noticed, but 24 June was the Feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist, and hard on the heels of the Lewis Carroll pilgrims another happy band came to Sandford on the feast which was also the Flower Festival. The visitors claimed a special devotion to John the Baptist and listened as their patron's teaching was read out from St. Lukes Gospel, chapter 3. It was God's justice and it was critical, even rude about those who betrayed it. "You slimy load of rattlesnakes," he said. "There's trouble coming for you, big trouble. You'd better do something about it. Change direction, live differently. Don't count on your privileged position. "That sounds like the warnings we're getting about the environment. How WE live will make the difference.

"What should we do?" they asked him. "Share," he said. "If you've got two of anything, share with people that have none. If you've got food do the same." Many haven't got the necessities. We who have should find ways of sharing. That sounds common-sense as well as common decency. The less fair society is, the more repression it will need to keep the lid on. There will always be inequalities this side if heaven, as people have different skills and choose to use them differently. But blatant unfairness, wastefulness and greed, are as corrupting for the rich as they are embittering for the less well off.

Among those who came to John's baptism were professional people. "What should we do?" they ask. "Honesty," says John. "God is a God of Truth, so you too must be truthful and honest." Why not accept declining moral standards, if we can get away with it? Because says John, it's wrong. Remember the eighth commandment? Thou shalt not steal.

Soldiers came to baptism, including the police. "No bullying," said John. "No violence, no false accusations or fabricated evidence." That's the ninth commandment, and that also follows from God being a God of Truth, requiring us to be truthful.

John then criticized the public and personal morality of the ruling classes, and gave serious offence. One way of seeing what he has to say to each of us is by asking which of his lines annoys us most. Is it when he tells me to share, or to pay my taxes honestly, or not to be violent in the name of the law and order, or to tidy up my act in other areas? Live better, he said, and he got carted of to prison. But the story had a happy ending. From his prison cell he heard what his successor Jesus was up to. People were being liberated in all sorts of ways. So John went to his violent death knowing that the power of evil was defeated, even though it would still take his life. God's justice was overcoming all the rotten aspects of an unfair world. And if you can see that vision of God's future, you can throw in your lot with it, and help it to come about. The strength to do it will be given to those who turn about to face the source of all goodness, justice and truth.

Wanted...

After editing the Link for over a year! have decided that it is time to hand the reins over to someone else in the village who would like to take and hand in producing the monthly magazine. My wish would be for someone who has a higher profile and is in touch with the village to step in and take on the none too onerous duties of Editor. I would hope that someone could take the job on in time to produce either the September or October edition. Please contact Richard Jackson if you are interested.

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

Dove Why doesn't God answer my prayer?

A question asked by all of us at some time or other. What we want and what God knows that we need are two different things. He answers our prayer but in a different way - His way.

Isaiah 55:9

YES, THE HEAVENS ARE AS HIGH ABOVE THE EARTH AS MY WAYS
ARE ABOVE YOUR WAYS, MY THOUGHTS ABOVE YOUR THOUGHTS.
