Flower Festival & Fete
Thanks to all who worked, attended, gave and spent, making both of these events
enjoyable and successful.
Children's Choir
This is planned for 10.00am the first Sunday of the month, and is open to all. Those
interested please contact Linda Hackett, xxx Henley Road, for rehearsal time.
Sponsored Cycle Ride
The annual ride for Oxfordshire Historic Churches Preservation Trust takes place
on Saturday 8th September. Sandford has promised to enter a team (and claim a
share in the proceeds). Churches are open from l0am to 6pm and you work out
your own route and mode of transport (walk, cycle, car etc.) and get yourself
sponsors. It is architecturally very interesting and satisfying, and free advice is
available on routes, high spots etc. If you would like an entry form please contact
Mrs Harris (24 Henley Road) or Mr Jones (Cabora Bassa, Church Road) or the
Vicar (Lower Farm, or tel 748848 for delivery).
Friends of Sandford Fun Run
"Young men and maidens, old people and children - join the fun run". By the end
of this century nearly every village in England will have its own fun run. The first
Sandford occurence of the event is Saturday 14th July 1990. Start 3pm in field
outside the village hall. The mute will be announced later and will be picturesque
and about 3 miles. Entry registration £1, but children free. Please indicate your
willingness to run or walk it - or to be a steward.
A Special Occasion
Sunday 10th June marked a very special occasion here in Sandford. Two of
Church Roads loveliest people, Tom and Lillian Bennett, celebrated their diamond
wedding anniversary. Tom and Lillian met nearly 70 years ago in an Oxford
ballroom and Tom has been sweeping Lillian off her feet ever since!
"What should we do?" they asked him. "Share," he said. "If you've got two of anything, share with people that have none. If you've got food do the same." Many haven't got the necessities. We who have should find ways of sharing. That sounds common-sense as well as common decency. The less fair society is, the more repression it will need to keep the lid on. There will always be inequalities this side if heaven, as people have different skills and choose to use them differently. But blatant unfairness, wastefulness and greed, are as corrupting for the rich as they are embittering for the less well off.
Among those who came to John's baptism were professional people. "What should we do?" they ask. "Honesty," says John. "God is a God of Truth, so you too must be truthful and honest." Why not accept declining moral standards, if we can get away with it? Because says John, it's wrong. Remember the eighth commandment? Thou shalt not steal.
Soldiers came to baptism, including the police. "No bullying," said John. "No violence, no false accusations or fabricated evidence." That's the ninth commandment, and that also follows from God being a God of Truth, requiring us to be truthful.
John then criticized the public and personal morality of the ruling classes, and gave serious offence. One way of seeing what he has to say to each of us is by asking which of his lines annoys us most. Is it when he tells me to share, or to pay my taxes honestly, or not to be violent in the name of the law and order, or to tidy up my act in other areas? Live better, he said, and he got carted of to prison. But the story had a happy ending. From his prison cell he heard what his successor Jesus was up to. People were being liberated in all sorts of ways. So John went to his violent death knowing that the power of evil was defeated, even though it would still take his life. God's justice was overcoming all the rotten aspects of an unfair world. And if you can see that vision of God's future, you can throw in your lot with it, and help it to come about. The strength to do it will be given to those who turn about to face the source of all goodness, justice and truth.

Why doesn't God answer my prayer?
A question asked by all of us at some time or other. What we want and what God knows that we need are two different things. He answers our prayer but in a different way - His way.
Isaiah 55:9
YES, THE HEAVENS ARE AS HIGH ABOVE THE EARTH AS MY WAYS
ARE ABOVE YOUR WAYS, MY THOUGHTS ABOVE YOUR THOUGHTS.
