Rest in peace

Mrs Vera Norton
Ray and Vera came to Sandford from Summertown in 1948 to take over (and improve) the garage on Henley Road. Vera had come to Oxford from Cambridge where her father made scientific instruments and during the war drove an ambulance in Oxford, later working as a telephonist with Hartwell's, then in Summertown. She married Ray in 1943 and produced Michael, Margaret and Trish, two of whom still live in Sandford, and kept the books for Ray's business. Over the past twenty-odd years she has been an adoring grandmother and all six girls will miss her hugely. She continued sewing (and chattering) to the end, making each girl a tapestry, and a family Christening dress. We will miss her. Not many people knew how ill she was for some time with breathing difficulties as she kept up her ebullient high spirits, but she knew, and chose joyful hymns for the church service: How great thou art, and Make me an instrument of thy peace. Our warmest sympathies to Ray and the family. After the service here in her church, and cremation, her ashes were laid in the Garden of Remembrance in the village she made her home over most of her adult life.

The Pitson Memorial
The wrought iron candlesticks in memory of Charlie and Elsie Pitson's lifetimes' devoted service will be dedicated on 22nd November at the 10.0 service. Since the stalks were given by Christ Church Canon Jeffrey (formerly Vicar of Headington) will do this, and as a canon is a big shot who can cope with height and distance he will also be asked to reach out and bless the Charlie Jones memorial i.e. the new stone cross on the church roof. The 20 beautiful candlesticks were made by Francis Shatford and will illuminate Compline at 9.0 p.m. in Lent and Advent, and on special occasions such as Carol services, Midnight Mass etc. The parish takes this opportunity to thank all those who contributed to the memorials to Charlie and Elsie Pitson, to Charlie Jones, and to Frank Welch and Joe Smith. We continue to treasure them all.

Vera Norton

Ray Norton writes: On behalf of all our family I would like to thank the village, readers of the Link and all kind friends who sent us cards and expressed their sympathy in various ways. Thank you all. Vera died suddenly in hospital on June 22nd, and came to our church on July 1st before cremation. Her ashes were placed in the Garden of Rest after Sunday service on July 5th. I would also like to especially thank the choir, the organist and the vicar (Bob) for a most beautiful service for Vera. Thank you all.

BAPTISMS

Eleanor Holly Shacklady of Henley Road,

Charlotte Saunders of Pheasant Walk

FAREWELLS

The nice thing about Sandford is how some of the golden oldies go on and on, but the sad thing is how many of the thirty-somethings move on fast. All the families who started the Sunday creche have now gone - lastly Ross, Carys, Eleanor and Jocelyn Beadle of River View - we wish them very well in Witney. Also from River View Drs Jonathan and Marie Claris Hamling and Harry (which still leaves over a dozen doctors in the village). Tony and Diana James from Church Road with thanks for business support for the Link. Also farewell shortly to Mandy and Adrian Matthews and their family of Keene Close. In their short stay here they made a notable contribution, Mandy especially by running the Toddlers group with Maria, and Adrian for his athletic prowess on the rugby field and Sandford River Run (oops, sorry) last year. Lots of other movement pending in the village so watch this space.

SANDFORD PARISH COUNCIL

Mr Nigel Northcott has offered to serve on the Parish Council and has been formally co-opted. Nigel lives at 13 River View, and will be welcomed by the council on his Acceptance of Office at their September meeting.
The present Council will hold office until May 1999.

Some highlights from recent Council meetings:

Village maintenance
Our two Bus Shelters in the Village had become rather dilapidated, but repairs have been completed, further enhancing the appearance of the centre of the village.
The railings round the Village Hall Recreation Ground have also been given a fresh coat of paint, and now look a lot smarter. Folk walking down Church Road to the river will find easier passage along the footpath below the Old School now that Four Pillars have cleared the dead and diseased trees along the boundary. The treatment may have seemed drastic, but was necessary after many years of neglect; Four Pillars will be re-planting with disease-resistant native species in due season.
Thanks to the neighbours for putting up with noise during operations.

Planning application
Yet another Planning Application has been submitted for the site of 7A Henley Road, opposite the Village Hall. A previous application, eighteen months ago, had been accepted, with conditions, by the Council. This latest application has been objected to on the grounds of access, and unsuitable style and materials for the village. Meanwhile, the site is becoming an eyesore at the centre of the village, and action may have to be taken.

MILLENNIUM EVENTS
The Council is studying several ideas for making the Millennium.
Please let us know of YOUR ideas,
what you would like to see or have done.

It is hoped that the next supplement will be published during October.

The Sandford River Run

The ninth of the 'nineties annual Fun Runs to Radley took place on 20th June in 80 odd degrees F. The heat and the World Cup and the Lord's Test Match, plus injury, work and idleness meant a reduced entry from the more portly previous competitors of Broadhurst Gardens and Henley Road, but Sam Hutton with bandages carried the Fox banner impressively over 5 miles (42 mins 30 secs) and the younger generation was well represented (23 entries for 3 miles). The over 55s division was hotly contested, all running the 5, with little to choose between Church Treasurer Mike Dixon, Vicar, and multi-grandfather Alan Butler, who was awarded the Sandford Rose Bowl. All around 50 mins.

The Sandford challenge shield was won by Steve Bull in 31.24, but as he had won it twice in the early nineties he passed it on to runner-up Peter Cork (34.05). Frank Bailey was proxime accessit at 34.15. Fastest woman over 5 miles was Brian and Pam's visitor Katherine Carpenter (42.18). Her husband Philip was even fitter (38.25) and Stephen Chambers 42.17. The most improved performance (in living memory) over 5 miles was Adrian Matthews 46.27 (who last year won the 'spare Bob's pride' award with well over 50). Paul Daglish was again very solid with 42.57 (last year 25.42 over 3 miles).

[Top] [Index]

In the three mile race medals were won by James Fenn - Gold - with 22.40, a remarkable performance for a ten year old - last year he did 27.45 - and a talented footballer too (his Mum Sharon was called away after 6 months' intensive training, alas). Junior gold to Laurence Hutton aged 7 (31.03). Senior silver to Ben Doyle aged 13 (24.12) and Bronze to Aidan Maulson aged 12 (26-49). Junior silver to Matthew Daglish (26.50).

Near miss certificates and commendations were awarded to Martin Judd (28.51 - last year 26.30 ...), Mitchell Maulson (30.11 - last year 28.10, aged 7), Clare Hutton (30.50), Thomas Gates (31.13), Faye O'Donahue (33.59), Sadie O'Donahue (35.05), Louise Quested (35.22), Jake Tasker (aged 8 - 35.46), Jessica Boyle (36.04), Kieran O'Donahue, aged 6-36.34 - he therefore wins the 'most improved junior award' - he took 45.40 to win the youngest competitor award last year). His father, Kieran senior 36.35, Thomas Daglish (37.30), Samantha Doyle (36.50), Emma Tasker (38.30), Matthew Gates (aged 7) 42.57, Christopher and Jenny Gates, Helen and Alice Daglish - who gets the bravery award for coping with an untoward incident on the tow-path which cast a shadow over an otherwise good day.

The Fox Pub The atrocious heat conditions were reflected in the older gents' times as against last year in the mud. Special appreciation to Vince Boyle for his meticulous time-keeping, to Prue Sykes for back-up, to Jane, Gill, Liz and People's Warden Ray Lee for Red Cross arrangements, to everyone who gave and won sponsorship. Among those who did not run this year were Andy and Karen Pike whose baby arrived 2 weeks ago (this was accepted as fair enough). Lamer excuses were noted in the Book of Sandford, and we look forward to welcoming stragglers back to the fold next June.

Village Hall

After ten years as Chairman of the Management Committee and Trustees Mr Gladwell is standing down. It has at times been a thankless task clearing up after vandalism, etc. and with less cooperation on occasion than he had a right to expect. But he has remained cheerful and pays tribute to the rest of the committee. The treasurer Mr Bunce also retired with his presentation of the accounts (see June Link). He has kept them meticulously for years again with some users being less than helpful. Richard Brown of 7 Rock Farm Lane takes over as chairman, Gloria Caswell as secretary, and Paul Daglish as treasurer. Mrs Hazel Hutton remains caretaker and Sharon Fenn of 3 Henley Road (Tel:716597) in charge of bookings.

On behalf of the village the Link thanks both the out-going and the in-coming teams, and also Mrs Janet Shepherd for getting action accelerated on the Council's paying for the renovation of the kitchen during her brief tenure as Chairman.

Don't suffer in silence

Domestic violence is any physical, emotional or sexual abuse between people who are, or have been, in a close relationship. It can happen to anyone, whatever their age. There are local organisations which can offer confidential advice, some of which are:
Oxford Women's Aid (791186) who offer a safe place to stay, and information, advice and support to women and their children.
Victim Support (711186) who have a team of volunteers who visit people at home or in a neutral place and offer emotional support and practical help.
Housing Rights Centre (247853), who offer free advice on housing issues.
Citizens Advice Bureau (247578) who offer free information on benefits, women's rights, divorce and custody of children, and a range of other information. They can also advise you on how to contact a solicitor and whether you will be eligible for Legal Aid.
Oxford Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Centre (726295) who offer free confidential support to women of all ages who have suffered any physical, emotional or sexual abuse recently or in the past.
Samaritans (722122) who offer confidential counselling on any problems.

and

The price of progress - or vandalism in Sandford

The new houses in Heyford Hill Lane are an attractive addition to the village. Many of us are also pleased that the Donnington Trust has not been free to sell the field between there and the old village for in-fill development. But can someone explain why some barbarian thought it necessary to send in a JCB and tear down the very attractive hedge behind Broadhurst Gardens and so displace several pheasant and reduce the amenities for residents?

Friends of the Fabric

Friends of God will meet as usual weekly this autumn, but a recent report on the state of St Andrew's church tower, eroded by chemicals in the air, suggests that major patching and rebuilding will soon be needed. The managers of the Building Fund therefore invite also villagers who are not regular worshippers inside this building, but value its continued presence as a local resource, to join up with the Friends of St Andrews to make an annual donation (tax-exempt) towards its upkeep. Please contact vicar, or treasurer (78 Church Road) or Covenants Secretary (Old School, Church Rd) or Warden 24 or 93 Henley Road) for form or further info.

Garden Therapy
Spending my hours,
planting the flowers
to brighten the gloom
with many a bloom.
When the flowers are at their best
I'm at rest.
What a bargain,
Nature so giving,
helping my living.
Every Time
You have won a prize.
Thank you I feel honoured.
But to me gardening is not about winning or losing,
to me it's about being at one with nature and the maker.
From him I win a prize -
it helps to brighten any gloom
every time a flower does bloom.

It makes sense

Each house in Oxfordshire produces on average 0.8 tonnes of waste per year a little higher than the national average of 0.7 tonnes. The County Council waste management bill is a massive £7 million a year, largely as a result of disposal costs a hefty proportion of your Council tax bill is for waste. The Agenda 21 group, made up of ordinary residents within South Oxfordshire, is currently looking into new (and old) ways to reduce, re-use and recycle the waste we produce. This will save landfill space, resources, liberate funds and generate income for more important services. They will be looking at a number of projects to reduce waste and benefit the environment over the coming months. These include community compost schemes, information campaigns for householders and small businesses and promoting reusable products.
If you would like to be involved, or would like more information, please write to Andrew Tinsley, Isis House, Howbery Park, Wallingford, OX 10 8BD.
