Link Supplement     February 99

Welcome to the first issue in 1999 of the 'Link Supplement'. It has been sometime since the last issue so let's start by updating you on what has been recently done and what is planned for the future by your Parish Council.

Recreation Facilities: Many of you will have noticed the improvements recently carried out in the play area of the Recreation Ground. A new "Little Hamlet" adventure area is now available for use by the younger members of the village. Future plans also include improvements to the football pitch. The Council acknowledges it thanks to Cllr M.Darcy for his work in making it all happen. On the subject of recreation areas concerns have been raised regarding the condition and misuse of the Fox Furlong play area. This has been discussed a number of times at recent Council meetings and it has been decided that unless local residents request otherwise consideration will be given to the removal of the existing play equipment. Let us have your views by contacting Cllr Mike Darcy on 748573.

The Millennium gets ever closer and although nothing has yet been finalised a number of suggestions have been made and are being considered for

further action. First a circular walk within the parish. The objective is to create this circular walk by connecting Heyford Hill Lane to the Thames towpath at the Isis Bridge, which carries the Southern by-pass over the river at the most northerly point of the parish boundary. This initiative is being investigated by Cllr Nigel Northcott who would welcome your comments and help, contact him on 773569.
Another idea being considered is that of a memorial stone, perhaps to be located at the corner of Church Road and Henley Road. It is also proposed that a time capsule containing the names of all Sandford residents be placed in the memorial. Again your comments would be appreciated and should be made to Cllr Ray James on 395925.

The Annual Village Quiz is being arranged by Maurice Earp, it will be held in the Village Hall on the 6th March at 7.30pm (8pm start). Teams will be limited to 5 persons per team. Refreshments and a bar will be available and there will also be a raffle. Tickets costing £3 each, which include a supper platter, are available from Rev. Bob Morgan, Nigel at the Fox and from Maurice at 41 Henley Road. If you're free please support this event which is being held in aid of local good causes.

Sandford Women's Institute: Our local WI continues to be busy and active. Following a Christmas Party where I am advised members and guests arrived laden with food and goodies (are we men missing out here?) They have quickly got back into the routine of interesting monthly meetings. In January this was on Aromatherapy; on February 15th there is a talk on '50 years in the life of a nanny' and on April 19 'On a Bicycle made for Two'. All meetings start at 7.30pm and are held in the Village Hall and are open to all. Further information from Joan Inston on 715788.

Littlemore Shop: The shop on the forecourt of Littlemore Hospital is happy to welcome customers from the village for the purchase of newspapers, bread, milk and other groceries. Opening hours are currently 8.30am-3pm Monday to Friday.

Parish Skips: A skip is provided each month by SODC Environmental Services, at the request of the Parish Council for the use of all village residents, at a location specified by the Parish Council. Some months the skip is left on site for only one full day and on others it is left for a whole weekend. At present there are two sites: the Village Hall Car Park and Park Homes site. The skip is not meant to be used for the disposal of large items, if

you have any such items to dispose of please use the free collecting service available, which can be contacted on 01491 823416.

Bus Service: The 16B bus service has now been cancelled by Cityline as they felt that an average of two people per bus going to Sandford was insufficient for them to continue it. We have been informed the last service will be on Sunday 28th February. From that date the last bus leaving town is the x39 at 8.30pm. The Council is approaching Stagecoach to see whether or not the 105 or x39 could be extended to replace the l6B. We will keep you advised of any developments.
